What is real purified water?
By: Rudy B. Oblimar
BSBA/MPA/ACE – 22 years in Drinking Water Business
Such question is the real issue among dealers of Water Purifiers as well as water refilling station business owners and even to consumers.
According to the refilling station business owners (not to include those who are not using reverse osmosis), drinking water that does not passes through the reverse osmosis filtration system is not yet the best water. Hence, waters that have not passed through the reverse osmosis filtration system can not be called purified water for it does not eradicate possible impurities that are present in the drinking water.
Therefore, for the refilling station business owners, water that has passed through the reverse osmosis is the real thing! (The Real Thing? Meaning, the real Purified Water, as supposed).
“Hell, no! The heavens forbid!” the Water Purifier sellers, (as well as those people selling CMD or Concentrace Mineral Drops in the Philippines as well as networking business owners that also sell products which can be added to the drinking water as Mineralizers) disagree!…To them, Waters that have no minerals can not and, in no way be called as Mineral or Purified Water!!! For only water with minerals has the only right to be called the real Purified Water!
Here comes another very annoying and confusing definition of the real purified water…Drinking water that has passed through the reverse osmosis is neither a Purified Water nor a Mineral Water! But rather, they are called the Demineralized Water! (Since when??)
Hell, no! For heaven’s sake! Says the refilling station business owner…while it is true that reverse osmosis removes almost 100% Minerals in the water, we have never and will never agree to that! Ever since, we have not, and did not in any way, positioned our Refilling Station Waters to our consumers as Demineralized Waters! In fact, people are calling it the mineral water although actually it never is!
The demineralized water issue among water refilling station waters is just a mere resistance as part of their weak points in refilling station business. Nonetheless, the issue is simply resolved by telling its clients and consumers that they can get minerals out from the food they eat such as; Butter, Milk, Cheese, and the like.
The demineralized water issue among water refilling station business is simply malicious, malevolent and a foul statement among drinking water business competitors! Especially among those who are trying to sell their so called healthy CMD Mineralizers! Like CMD or Concentrace Mineral Drops in the Philippines, the so called pi Waters, and the like, are even tagging these demineralized waters as never a Mineral Water but a FUNERAL WATER!!! As such, is a humiliation to these refilling station business owners.
Nevertheless, call them malicious, malevolent and or horrible, the Water Purifier Business Owner further disputes the idea that we can easily get or substitute minerals out from the food we eat such as; Butter, Milk, Cheese, and the like. The mineral substitute issue is only good to the western countries where Butter, Milk, Cheese, and the like are abundant in their daily breakfast habit (if not in their lunch or dinner!)
Butter, Milk, Cheese, are common food in the Philippines? Of course, no! Ask your grandmother! (if she is still alive,) You can rarely find these in a common Filipino Table! For even rich Filipinos prefer Tuyo! (Dried fish) in breakfast or Sinigang na Baboy (a soured tasty boiled pork meat soup filled up with vegetable). “So, where are your substitute minerals there??” says the Water Purifier Business Owner.
Going back to our subject, If demineralized water is not a Purified Water, Then, what do you call these so called demineralized water? (It is still purified water! isn’t it?)
Are you not starting to get confused and annoyed?
Again going back to the question, what really is a real purified water?
Let us first examine the subject matters…First, there is a Purified Water, Second, there is a Mineral or Mineralized Water. Third, there is the Demineralized Water. (Shall we include the distilled water? No? Would it make more confusing and annoying if we include it? Okay then, we may include it in the discussion later).
Allow me to make mention these, dear readers,
More often than not, (to exclude people who are only unconsciously brained washed if not indoctrinated by their water business mentors), People who are doing water business in their respective industries are just making a self serving definition as to what is a real purified water. Each definitions, peculiarities and ambiguities were just meant to show and present that they are in the authority, so to speak, on the issues relating to the aspects of drinking water.
Bear in mind that even at this very moment, the Bureau of Food and Drug Administration or BFAD and even the World Health Organization (WHO) per se; has not yet come up with a common standard as to what is a real purified drinking water.
Let us remember that (FYI if in case you did not know…) way back in the early stage of refilling station business in the Philippines, these issues have been the highlights among water refilling station business. These took effect when expensive water refilling station owners found out that there are few refilling stations that do not use reverse osmosis treatment! Just like the “Water refilling Station” use by Dr. Deauna.
“Papano naman kami? Ang mahal mahal ng equipment namin tapos ganon ganon na lang kukumpetensyahan lang naman pala kami ng mumurahing refilling stations?!”
To its effect, right now a container of water refilling station is now sold at P15.00 per container! Of course sanitation is another issue! In this case Sanitation is not the issue why the refilling station water is now sold at P15.00 per container. (Ask me where and I will tell you where.. It’s sold here in Cagayan de Oro City)
As to what is the real standard of a real purified drinking water? The subject matter was tackled by the press and the media and even to the Philippine Senate Arena in early 2000. They suppose to gather and investigate chemists as well as professionals who have been in practice selling the so called purified water systems or water purifiers in order to give shed in the light of legislation. However, up to this point in time the Philippine Senate is a Patrick Starfish in this issue! The Philippine Senate who supposes to shed light to this confusion remains in the midst of darkness.
Up until now the issue is still unresolved.
Nonetheless, dear readers, modesty aside, let me tell you that such annoying conflict of discussion which have been indoctrinated to the minds of innocent purified drinking water consumers , dealers, distributors and the like were actually fabricated, self-centered and economically motivated intentions due to the fact that they were meant only to capture the market of the Filipino drinking water consumers. Which is to me, is considered moral in the eyes of Marketing Professionals and Product Branders and Economists. What I do not like (of which I think this is not moral) is that they are they, who are responsible, and the author of “purified water confusions and dilemmas” (as to the question of which is better? those with mineral content or without mineral content water?) They have left to people a chaotic legacy as a result to their respective Purified Water Marketing and Economic Success.
Let me boil down the purified water issue in this manner,
First and foremost the issue as of what is a purified water, mineral water, demineralized water, distilled water, filtered water and of what ever water purification process were made, are after all irrelevant, immaterial and foremost illogical subject matters!. In other words let me say it in one word, the issue of this subject matter after all is “ridiculous”!
Yes, I will say it again, it is “ridiculous”!
Actually, what has been delivered by these Purified Water Marketing Professionals and Purified Water Economists to the people has resulted to absurd subject matter. Which has been again, the by- product to their Marketing and Economic Success.
Please find hereunder my reasons why;
In our high school chemistry we were taught by our chemistry teacher that there are four basic water purification methods or system: (you can find it in a Philippine 3rd year high school chemistry book) these are;
1. Filtration
2. Boiling
3. Chlorination
4. Distillation
1. Filtration
Filtration removes finely suspended material from the water by the use of a layer of sand or sand with crushed coal- supported by a gravel bed.
2. Boiling
Boiling is the conglomeration of particulates or sediments to settle. It also kills non heat resistant bacteria at its boiling point of 100 degrees.
3. Chlorination
Chlorination is the most commonly used disinfectant which disinfects by destroying pathogenic organisms in the water.
4. Distillation
Distillation Process is the principal method of purifying liquid compounds like water. In this process the water is vaporized. The vapor condensed and the condensate water is collected in a container. There is what you call the Distilled Water!
All these above mentioned are called water purification process, or process of water purification hence, the entire above are called: purified water.
It does not mention about Zero Bacteria, Zero Minerals or whatsoever. It simply means water that passes through a method or a system of treatment is called: Purified Water.
As to its end of use, and purpose, these are called Purified Waters. For as long as it passes through your personal taste, and desired quality of effluent, it is after all called: Purified Water.
Next is what we have learned in college chemistry – there are also many ways of purification processes. These are; Reverse-Osmosis, Ozonator, Ultra violet Light/Lamp, Ceramic Stone Filters, among others are still, called water purification process, or process of water purification. Hence, the entire above mentioned are called: purified water.
Now, because of the so called Purified Water Marketing Professionals and Purified Water Economists, the fad today is that people who are consuming water from a water refilling stations would say that purified water should be 100% free from bacteria and minerals. In its literal sense, absolutely pure H20.
Nonetheless, Purified Water Marketing Professionals and Purified Water Economists on the other side of the business aspect are trying to dispute of the fad and the concept that was introduced by them. On the other hand, the CMD or Concentrace Mineral Drops in the Philippines, the so called pi Waters, and the like, are even tagging these demineralized waters as never a Mineral Water but a FUNERAL WATER!!! And it would be such a disgrace to these refilling station business owners.
Water Purifier Sellers CDM or Concentrace Mineral Drops in the Philippines, the so called pi Waters, and the like stressed further that we should not forget, most especially in the third world countries that the essential minerals that are needed in the body are chiefly found in the water that we drink. And the product of reverse-osmosis is only healthy to those who have specific health problems, say kidney disease. We should not be deceived by believing that healthy water should only be claimed when it passes six, ten, eighteen or even a hundred stages since even BFAD and WHO cannot provide definite standards.
My conclusion…
Based on the above information, arguments, points, debates and discussions, Purified water therefore is subjective. It is in the consumers’ wisdom to choose which purification process fits his needs. If the quality of its effluent is need only for bath and laundry purposes why one would he need a purification process that uses a very expensive reverse osmosis procedure? Personally, even drinking water for that matter, I would not need a reverse osmosis since after all, water from our government water supply is chlorinated. For as long as it has enough activated carbon, to me, it’s more than purified water.
But again, its only my opinion and my choice is subject to my own personal preference and for now, nothing else yet.
As for me, For now, (since the senate or any particular institutions has not yet come-up with the exact answer as to what is the real purified water ) consumers should be the one to set the standards by their own choice! And not be cheated on by the ridiculous redundant stages of filtration systems set by profit–induced water refilling stations. Nor to these CMD Mineralizers Sellers.
Water when purified to a specific treatment need not go through the same treatment or say different treatments for it is already potable in the first place. E.g. our common public drinking tap water! (although pipe leakages and water safety in case of contamination is another issue!)
As it has been said, water that has undergone any kind of whatsoever purification process is real purified water.
